Mental models can help us make decisions in complex situations. Choosing whom to hire is among the most complex situations that a manager faces. I created the Engineering Personas (EP) model as a framework to think about the type of talent that I want on a software engineering team. This model can be applied to hiring decisions, suggests recruiting pipeline strategies, and can assess an existing team’s composition for potential friction points. The five Engineering Personas are: First Responder, Craftsperson, Consultant, Academic, Humanitarian. Personas are defined by a primary motivation. We can then make some observations about conditions that correlate with or frustrate that motivation.
